Client files

Client files are for admins, billing staff, and employees who work from an individual or business client record. Use the Files tab when you need to upload a document, organize folders, download a file, or check who can access a folder.

Employees with file access can also use this guide; see Permissions and Visibility if Files or file actions are hidden.

  1. Open Clients.
  2. Select the individual or business client.
  3. Open the Files tab.

The tab opens the client’s document folder and any folders inside it. Each row shows the folder or file name, who added it, and the Date it was added. To find a document, open the relevant folder and look for it by name or date.

  1. In the Files tab, choose the upload files control.
  2. In Upload Files, select Browse or drop files onto Drag & drop here.
  3. Add the files. The upload area shows a 10 MB maximum file size.

Uploaded files are stored in the client’s document folder. If your firm adds files while creating or editing a client, use the Upload Document step in the individual or business client flow. That step uses the same upload control and shows existing documents as file links.

Use folders when the client record needs separate areas for tax documents, contracts, receipts, or other working files.

From the Files tab you can:

  • Add a folder.
  • Upload files.
  • Move selected folders or files.
  • Delete selected folders or files.
  • Rename a folder or file.
  • Mark a folder as a favorite, or remove it from favorites.
  • Download a file.
  • Open folder or file details.

The right-click menu also includes Explore for folders, View for files, Download, Cut, Info, Rename, favorite controls, and Delete when your role allows them.

Use the favorite action on a folder to keep it at hand for quick access.

Folder details show access groups when access has been assigned:

  • Full Access
  • Upload & Organize
  • Upload Only
  • Read Only

Use Manage Access from folder details if you have permission to change folder access. If Manage Access, upload, move, delete, download, rename, or favorite controls are missing, ask an administrator to review your access in Permissions and Visibility.

This article covers firm-side client files only. It does not cover client-portal file upload or browsing, version history, retention policy, audit policy, document scanning, or scanner workflows.
