Configure custom roles and granular permissions

Firm owners and administrators can shape a custom role’s access more precisely once the role exists. This guide covers how permission toggles behave inside a role and how to start a new role from an existing one.

Roles in Assisterp are entirely firm-defined — there is no built-in list of role tiers to pick from. If you have not created a role yet, see Employees and Roles for how to open Roles, enter a Role Name, Sub Role Name, and Role Level, and assign the role to a staff member.

Inside Set Permissions, each permission tab is a tree: a section switch at the top, and individual permission switches nested under it.

  • Turning on a section’s switch does not turn on every permission inside it — use Select all for that.
  • A permission switch stays disabled until its section switch is turned on first.
  • Turning a section switch off removes every permission under it, even ones you had turned on individually.
  • Some permissions are locked on and can’t be turned off. These are permissions the role needs to function, and they’re enabled automatically when the role is created.

Instead of rebuilding a similar role’s permissions from scratch, duplicate a role that already has most of what you need:

  1. Open Settings > Employees & Roles > Roles.
  2. On the role you want to copy, select the duplicate icon in the action column.
  3. Assisterp opens a new role pre-filled with the original role’s permissions. Role Name is pre-filled with the original name plus “Copy”.
  4. Change the Role Name, Sub Role Name, or Role Level as needed.
  5. Adjust permissions if the new role needs different access.
  6. Select Add to save it as a separate role.

Duplicating a role doesn’t change the original — you end up with two independent roles. You can duplicate the protected Administrator / Full Access role this way, and the new copy’s permissions are fully editable; only the original role itself stays locked (see Employees and Roles).
